Nymphing Aint Easy...OK, Maybe It Is!
When the dog days of summer are upon us, and the water is warm and green, catching fish can be tough. After losing a nice largemouth bass and a decent striper half way to the boat, I knew it was gonna be one of those days. Sooo, to repair the ego and pass time, as the sun hung high in the muggy sky, I switched to a foam/deer hair cricket with a Copper John dropper nymph thinking I would elicit some action. Boy was I right! When the water is warm and the fish are sluggish they tend to 'short hit' flies. I have been frustrated many times in the hot sun when bluegills will bounce a popper all over the water and rarely take the hook. Today would have been one of those days. But by adding a small nymph, about any will do- or a sanjuan worm dropper, the cricket barely had time to get wet. Hours were spent hauling in fish after fish. On average, it took about a 2-3 ft. drift before the indicator cricket would take off for deeper water. Crappie, 'gills, green sunfish, small bass were all lining up to see what that little shiny thing was under that cricket! And only 2 fish all day on the actual cricket! Anyway, enjoy the warm water tip and tight lines!
